I don’t know about you, but I adore oranges. They’re so refreshing in summer, yet have enough substance to make a filling winter snack. And breakfast – who eats that meal without some OJ? So this week, I’m putting the new-use spotlight on the citrusy fruit. If you don’t have a fridge-full already, here are three out-of-the-box uses that might convince you to load up next time you’re at the grocery store.

oranges new use tuesdays: oranges

1. Natural candle: An orange half can come very handy in an emergency situation. Remove the flesh but leave the middle stem in place. Fill the cavity with cooking oil, and light the stem like you would a candle.

2. Room deodorizer: Infuse your space with a pleasing scent by sticking a few dozen cloves in a washed orange – get creative with a fun pattern – and leaving it on display. The two strong aromas combine into a sweet smell that continues for months, well after the fruit has dried.

3. Kindle stand-in: Forgo the usual newspaper for getting things started in your fireplace and opt instead for orange peels. They burn longer, smell better and produce less creosote, which can lead to tarry smoke.
